ART GALLERY OF NEW SOUTH WALES | ARTside-in! AGNSW

The Caledonia Foundation is continuing its support for AGNSW’s ARTsidein! program, an educative outreach initiative designed by the Public Programs Department of the Art Gallery of New South Wales (AGNSW). The program targets Years 10, 11 and 12 secondary visual arts students – and their teachers - from secondary schools in NSW which are classified as geographically, socioeconomically or culturally disadvantaged. The project enables students, who would otherwise have limited opportunity to access the Gallery’s resources, to participate in structured engagement with the Gallery’s collection, exhibitions and programs

CURE FOR LIFE FOUNDATION | Predictive Biomarker Discovery

The Caledonia Foundation will support the groundbreaking work of Dr Kerrie McDonald in cerebral tumour research to deliver improved therapy for patients with high grade gliomas. The project prioritises a personalised approach to the treatment of the most common primary brain tumours, aiming to match ‘the right drug to the right patient’. The support from The Caledonia Foundation will not only assist in the delivery of improved therapy for patients with high grade glioma, but will be readily adapted to paediatric brain tumour marker discovery and other cancer research. The Cure for Life Foundation was founded in 2003 by Dr Charles Teo and seeks to advance the research and treatment of brain tumours within Australia, while increasing public awareness of the incidence of brain tumours.

DOCUMENTARY AUSTRALIA FOUNDATION

The Caledonia Foundation is a proud supporter of the Documentary Australia Foundation (DAF), a private philanthropic initiative that recognizes the power of documentary as a catalyst for social change. Caledonia Foundation has provided capacity-building assistance to DAF, which acts as a resource to bring together philanthropic grantmakers, charities and filmmakers for community benefit.

EXODUS FOUNDATION | The SchoolWise Program - Redfern

Schoolwise is an intensive literacy skills program for children in Years 1 to 6 who are at risk of dropping out of school due to childhood depression, violence, family disintegration, education disruption and learning disabilities. The Schoolwise program was designed by Macquarie University Special Education Centre (MUSEC) and uses the MULTILIT (Making Up Lost Time in Literacy) system and evaluation methodology. MULTILIT is characterized by individualised remedial literacy exercises using sounding out skills, sight word recognition, spelling and one-to-one tutoring. Caledonia Foundation’s contribution will be used towards the expansion of the Schoolwise program at Redfern. Since its inception in 2007, the Redfern Schoolwise program has achieved excellent outcomes for children with significant literacy challenges.

The Foundation for Rural and Regional Renewal

The Caledonia Foundation is collaborating with the Foundation for Rural and Regional Renewal (FRRR) over three years, commencing in March 2008, in support of the PEERS program (Participation, Equipment, Education, Resources and Sustainability) across rural and regional Australia. The Caledonia-funded PEERS program will offer grassroots support to small communities through projects which assist disadvantaged young people in a leveraged, sustainable way.

MATILDA ROSE EARLY INTERVENTION CENTRE | Matilda Rose Turbo

The Matilda Rose Early Intervention Centre (MREIC) was established in January 2001, to offer a program to meet the needs of profoundly deaf children, with additional disabilities. It caters for pre-school children, and also offers a transition program to appropriate educational placements. MREIC is a joint venture between the Carnegie Foundation and the Sydney Cochlear Implant Centre (SCIC). The Caledonia Foundation has been a supporter of MREIC since its inception and will continue its support in 2008, as part of a 3-year commitment (2006-2008). This will assist MREIC in expanding its operations, meeting human resource needs and enhancing access by regional and remote families.

IN A LEAGUE OF THEIR OWN

Caledonia Foundation is pleased to support the production of 'In a League of their Own', a three-part series tracking the journey of the Tiwi Island Bombers, Australia’s first all-indigenous AFL team to play in a major competition, in their quest to win the Northern Territory premiership in 2008.

Caledonia Foundation’s support will assist specifically with post-production of the series itself, as well as the development of an educational DVD incorporating health, nutrition and gambling messages, to be distributed to young people in remote aboriginal communities across the Northern Territory. Caledonia’s support for ‘In a League of their Own’ has been facilitated by the Documentary Australia Foundation.

IN THE COMPANY OF ACTORS | Outreach and Education Grant

In the Company of Actors is a documentary film about the process of creating theatre. As part of an Education and Outreach grant from The Caledonia Foundation Fund, this documentary is being donated to every Secondary School in Australia. The resource will be available to both teachers and students of English, Drama, Theatre Studies, Film and Media Studies, and anyone interested in the collaborative process of creating a theatrical production. This grant has also funded a Study Guide prepared by Australian Teachers of Media (ATOM), together with the creation of a major web site to accompany the educational documentary.

ST LUKES HOSPITAL FOUNDATION

Sydney’s St. Luke's Hospital enhances individual and community health by providing compassionate, excellent and culturally sensitive care to the diverse patients it serves. It is a vital member of a not-for-profit community hospital system. The Caledonia Foundation’s support as part of a 4-year grant (2006-2009) will assist St Lukes to deliver specialist care to disadvantaged young children who have been affected by a serious illness.

SMART POPULATION FOUNDATION | Raising Children Project

Smart Population Foundation is a not-for-profit organisation that has developed the Raising Children Project, a national education initiative bringing the most essential child health and family management information and strategies to parents during the early years, giving their children the best chance at a good start in life. It represents an interactive guide based on the comprehensive content of the companion quality assured national parenting. The support of the Caledonia Foundation will assist families and disadvantaged young mothers around Australia.

SOCIAL VENTURES AUSTRALIA | SVA Boost! Fund

The SVA Boost! Fund, through Social Ventures Australia, is Australia’s first venture philanthropy fund, which supports high impact social ventures that have clear, accountable and measurable strategies for social return. The Fund gives the added assurance that supported “investment” ventures receive more than just funding, they also receive management, strategic and operational advice to effectively realize social goals.

Beyond Empathy (General Arts Grant)

Beyond Empathy’s (BE) utilizes the arts, film, media, mentorship and partnerships to create sustainable pathways for young disadvantaged people throughout Australia. It aims to share understanding about people marginalized through poverty, homelessness, lack of education and employment opportunities, family and cultural isolation, violence and substance abuse through its arts projects.

DREAM THE PATHWAYS | Centacare Wilcannia Forbes

A pilot partnership between Dream the Pathways and Hands on Learning in the Wilcannia Forbes district, focusing on school retention and transition to employment for indigenous and at-risk young people in Central and Western NSW. The pilot school program is expected to take place in the 2009 school year. Dream the Pathways is seeking to support young people in school through encouraging positive engagement in mainstream school and engaging early school leavers in alternative learning towards Year 10 and/or vocational accreditation.

THE MIRABEL FOUNDATION | Mirabel Educational Enhancement Program

The Mirabel Foundation supports children who have typically been abandoned by their parents or their parents have died (in both instances commonly as a result of drug/substance abuse). The Caledonia Foundation has, since its inception, provided support to Mirabel’s education programs and continues its support in 2008.

STARLIGHT CHILDREN'S FOUNDATION

Starlight’s programs aim to brighten the lives of seriously ill and hospitalised children, and their families, by delivering innovative programs that restore the fun, laughter and joy that a life-threatening illness takes away. The Caledonia Foundation has, since its inception, been a supporter of Starlight and in 2008 continues its support to Starlight’s Fun Centre project which is designed to deliver entertainment distraction to a child’s hospital bedside via e-inclusion and leading edge technology.

STATE LIBRARY FOUNDATION OF NSW

State Library of New South Wales is one of the oldest libraries in Australia, with a history that can be traced back to the establishment of the Australian Subscription Library in 1826. The Caledonia Foundation’s support in 2008 will assist The State Library to foster an environment that promotes the importance of literacy for Australia’s young adolescents.

THE OASIS | Outreach and Education Grant

The Oasis is a hard-hitting observational documentary exposing the tragedy of Australia's youth homelessness problem. Filmed over two years, it depicts the dedicated and often thankless work of the Oasis Youth Support Network, under the direction of Captain Paul Moulds, in Sydney’s Surry Hills. Over 1.1 million viewers tuned into the ABC’s screening of The Oasis on April 10.

As part of the 'Australia's Homeless Youth 2008' initiative, Caledonia Foundation is pleased to support the donation of a copy of The Oasis DVD, accompanied by a Study Guide, to every secondary school in Australia.

The Salvation Army OASIS Technology Centre & Film & Radio School

The Caledonia Foundation continues its support as part of a three-year grant towards the development of OASIS' Technology Centre @ Surry Hills. The Centre focuses on training disadvantaged young adolescents in video production & editing; repair, upgrading & recycling of computers; web site & database creation, as well as input & management of SOS Salvos' online auction site. Also under development at the Centre is a TAFE accredited Multimedia IV course that will operate out of the Film & Radio School.

THE SYDNEY THEATRE COMPANY

The objective of the Sydney Theatre Company’s Theatre Experience Program is to establish an introduction to live performance, exploration of theatre practice and access to behind-the-scenes at NSW performance venues for disadvantaged students. The Caledonia Foundation is a long-term supporter of the STC Access Program for Disadvantaged Students and its Educational Touring Program and is continuing to support STC’s educational programs through a 3-year grant (2007-2009).

YOUTH DEVELOPMENT AUSTRALIA LIMITED | National Youth Commission on youth Homelessness

YDA is a public benefit institution established to improve the welfare and well-being of homeless, at risk, marginalized and disadvantaged young people. The Caledonia Foundation is providing funds for an independent inquiry into issues associated with youth homelessness. This enquiry will result in a national comprehensive report which will include remedial strategies for the long term management of youth homelessness. This report will be released in early 2008 in conjunction with a major documentary on youth homelessness.
