LEARNING LINKS | Helping Disadvantaged Kids who Struggle to learn

Learning Links is a Sydney-based not-for-profit organisation working in partnership with families to assist young children who have difficulty learning. It was established in 1972 by parents and professionals, to bring together specialist teachers, psychologists, speech pathologists, occupational therapists, physiotherapists, social workers and family counsellors to offer a multidisciplinary, all-encompassing service.

LIFE CHANGING EXPERIENCES FOUNDATION | SISTER2sister Project

Life Changing Experiences Foundation Ltd (LCEF) is based in Sydney NSW and supports disadvantaged youth. The Caledonia Foundation is providing support for its SISTER2sister Project, a 12 month mentoring program, aiding teenage girls who have suffered or are suffering due to circumstances out of their control. It provides inspiration, support and opportunity as well as “life changing experiences”. Each of the girls in the program is assigned a Big Sister mentor as a positive female role model to provide support, guidance and advice, where needed, throughout the 12 month program.

MATILDA ROSE EARLY INTERVENTION CENTRE | Matilda Rose Turbo

The Matilda Rose Early Intervention Centre (MREIC) was established in January 2001, to offer a program to meet the needs of profoundly deaf children, with additional disabilities. It caters for pre-school children, and also offers a transition program to the appropriate educational placement. MREIC is a joint venture between the Carnegie Foundation and the Sydney Cochlear Implant Centre (SCIC). The Caledonia Foundation has been a supporter of MREIC over the last 3-years and will continue its support in 2006 as part of a 3-year commitment (2006-2008). This will assist MREIC in expanding its area of operations by meeting the increased costs of employing a Teachers’ Aide and an additional part-time Teachers Aide for its respite services for families. The support from The Caledonia Foundation will enable the residential programs for regional or remote families to be further enhanced.

MISSION AUSTRALIA | Creative Youth Initiatives

Creative Youth Initiatives (CYI) provides “at risk” young people with creative opportunities, with the aim of building self esteem, improving communication skills and providing positive learning experiences and educational qualifications. The TAFE approved programs available to them through CYI are art, music or photography courses. The Caledonia Foundation will continue its support to the CYI initiative in 2006 as part of a 3-year commitment (2005-2007) to the program.

MONKEY BAA THEATRE FOR YOUNG PEOPLE LTD | In School Workshop Tour

Monkey Baa is a professional not-for-profit theatre company based in Sydney. Its mission is to provide national touring theatre programs that are unique and vital to empowering young people. The Caledonia Foundation in 2007 provided support to its touring program which targets students (8-12 yrs) and schools in specific regions of NSW classified disadvantaged, either socially or economically.

OASIS | Technology Centre & Film & Radio School

The Caledonia Foundation continued its support in 2007 as part of a 3-year grant towards the development of OASIS' Technology Centre @ Surry Hills. The Centre focuses on training disadvantaged young adolescents in video production & editing; repair, upgrading & recycling of computers; web site & database creation, input & management of SOS Salvos' online auction site. Also under development at the Centre is a TAFE accredited Multimedia IV course that will operate out of the Film & Radio School.

OZHARVEST LIMITED | OzHarvest Food Rescue

OzHarvest is based in Alexandria (an inner-city suburb of Sydney, NSW) and through its Food Rescue Program distributes surplus prepared meals from restaurants and other commercial outlets to charitable organisations feeding the homeless and disadvantaged. The Caledonia Foundation’s support in 2007 to OzHarvest was directed to its Food 4 Youth project which provides at least 15,000 meals per year to 5 charitable organisations in Sydney's South and East that assist homeless children and young people at risk.

SMART POPULATION FOUNDATION | Raising Children Project

Smart Population Foundation is a not-for-profit organisation that has developed the Raising Children Project, a national education initiative bringing the most essential child health and family management information and strategies to parents during the early years, giving their children the best chance at a good start in life. It represents an interactive guide based on the comprehensive content of the companion quality assured national parenting. The support of the Caledonia Foundation will assist families and disadvantaged young mothers around Australia.

SOCIAL VENTURES AUSTRALIA | SVA Boost! Fund

The SVA Boost! Fund, through Social Ventures Australia, is Australia’s first venture philanthropy fund, which supports high impact social ventures that have clear, accountable and measurable strategies for social return. The Fund gives the added assurance that supported “investment” ventures receive more than just funding, they also receive management, strategic and operational advice to effectively realize social goals.

The Caledonia Foundation, through the SVA Boost! Fund, will continue its support over the next 3-years (2007-2009). In 2007 The Caledonia Foundation supported the three initiatives that follow.

Beyond Empathy (General Arts Grant)

Beyond Empathy’s (BE) focus is arts educational programs. It utilizes the arts, film, media, mentorship and partnerships to create sustainable pathways for young disadvantaged people throughout Australia. It aims to share understanding about people marginalized through poverty, homelessness, lack of education and employment opportunities, family and cultural isolation, violence and substance abuse through its arts projects.

Hands on Learning

Hands on Learning supports an early intervention program facilitated by Victoria’s Frankston High School to meet the needs of highly disengaged students who are not performing in standard academically-based subjects and who are at threat of leaving school. Around 50 students spend one day a week working on projects around the school and local community.

The Chutzpah Factory College of Entrepreneurship

Founded in 2002, The Chutzpah Factory College of Entrepreneurship Inc is a Registered Training Organisation (RTO) providing accredited youth-entrepreneurship training throughout Australia. Through expert training, business mentoring, community engagement and personal support, young people are connected to their hidden potentials. Its educational programs aim to develop enterprise skills in young people who have been excluded from mainstream education systems as a result of family abuse, homelessness or juvenile criminal behaviours.

ST LUKES HOSPITAL FOUNDATION

Sydney’s St. Luke's Hospital enhances individual and community health by providing compassionate, excellent and culturally sensitive care to the diverse patients it serves. It is a vital member of a not-for-profit community hospital system. The Caledonia Foundation’s support over the next 3-years will indirectly assist St Lukes to deliver specialist care to disadvantaged young children who have been affected by a serious illness.

THE SYDNEY THEATRE COMPANY

The objective of the Sydney Theatre Company’s Theatre Experience Program is to establish an introduction to live performance, exploration of theatre practice and access to behind-the scenes at NSW performance venues for disadvantaged students. The Caledonia Foundation over the last 3 years has been a supporter of the STC Access Program for Disadvantaged Students and its Educational Touring Program and has recommitted its support to STC’s educational programs through a further 3-year grant (2007-2009).

TECHNICAL AID TO THE DISABLED | School's In

TAD's early intervention programs aim to assist the many children who face the challenges of developmental delays and/or developmental disabilities associated with cerebral palsy, down syndrome, sensory impairments, and autism. TAD NSW has three significant areas of services. The Caledonia Foundation directed its support in 2007 to TAD’s “School’s In” program through which 8 disabled children from low income families will each be provided with a custom made wheel chair thereby enabling them the mobility and opportunity to attend school on a regular daily basis.

YOUTH DEVELOPMENT AUSTRALIA LIMITED | National Youth Commission on youth Homelessness

YDA is a public benefit institution established to improve the welfare and well-being of homeless, at risk, marginalized and disadvantaged young people. The Caledonia Foundation is providing funds for an independent inquiry into issues associated with youth homelessness. This enquiry will result in a national comprehensive report which will include remedial strategies for the long term management of youth homelessness. This report will be released in early 2008 in conjunction with a major documentary on youth homelessness.
