ABORIGINAL RESOURCE & DEVELOPMENT SERVICES | (Yo Yawarriny! Nhaltjan Nhe Djal? Hey Young People. What do you want to know about?)

Aboriginal Resource and Development Services (ARDS) Community Development Radio Service (CDRS), broadcasting across north-east Arnhem Land and in Darwin, is successfully providing the Yolngu (Aboriginal) people of north-east Arnhem Land with access to an education and information service in their own language; Yolngu Matha.

&The Caledonia Foundation’s support to this project will enable educational radio programs to be developed and broadcast to an audience of approx 8,000 Yolngu People of the NT. The broadcasts will be in the Yolngu People's native language.

ANGLICARE | Survival Skills Program

Anglicare through one of its support services programs facilitates a Survival Skills for Healthy Families program in 2004/05. Issues dealt with include sex, drugs and you, solving family problems, older teenager issues, conflict resolution, as children grow. The Caledonia Foundation’s grant to Anglicare has enabled disadvantaged families to attend and participate in the program.

ART GALLERY OF NEW SOUTH WALESE | ARTside-in! AGNSW (Stages 1, 2 & 3)

The Caledonia Foundation continued its support in 2005 to AGNSW’s ARTside-in!, an outreach program designed by the Public Programs Department of the Art Gallery of New South Wales (AGNSW). The program targets Years 10, 11 and 12 secondary visual arts students that have limited opportunity to access the Gallery’s collection, exhibitions, programs and resources. The project enables these students who are disadvantaged by geographic and economic factors, to participate in the culture of the Gallery and for the Gallery to experience and learn from the students in their school environment.

THE AUSTRALIAN OUTWARD DEVELOPMENT FUND | Regional Community Partnership – Moree District

The Caledonia Foundation continued its support into 2005 of OBA’s Regional Community Partnership for the Moree District. Its educational programs focus on real life skills, such as self-confidence; personal leadership; time management; social competence and emotional control. The Moree Community Partnership joins the Moree community with Outward Bound Australia and The Caledonia Foundation. The partnership seeks to engage a significant proportion of Year 9 (15-16 year old) Moree students in positive, challenging, personal development experiences through an Outward Bound course.

AUSTRALIAN THEATRE FOR YOUNG PEOPLE (atyp) | West Coast Tasmania Project 2005: Tour of Night Places

Following the success of this 2004 pilot, The Caledonia Foundation agreed to continue its support into 2005 by providing shortfall funding. This project engages disadvantaged and marginalized young people from the West Coast of Tasmania in the performance of the play Night Places which will tour the local schools and also be performed in Hobart.

BARNARDOS AUSTRALIA | South Coast Children's Family Centre, Warrawong Aboriginal Specific Barnardos Early Year Home Support Service (BEYSHH)

Following on from The Caledonia Foundation’s previous grant to Barnardos South Coast area, The Caledonia Foundation agreed to continue its support to a home visiting program specifically focusing on young aboriginal families in the Wollongong, Shellharbour & Kiama local Government areas.

EXODUS FOUNDATION | Youth Education Tutorial Centre

The Caledonia Foundation continued its support in 2005 to Exodus’ Youth Education Tutorial Centre at Ashfield. The key objective of the Tutorial Centre is to address the needs of children from socially disadvantaged backgrounds who are at risk of alienation from the school system because of severe problems with reading and related skills. The Centre offers an intensive remedial reading program known as “Schoolwise” which aims to get students back into the school system again within a 12 month period.

GIANT STEPS | Vocational Training Program for the Secondary Program

Giant Steps is an educational training Centre for autistic children. The Caledonia Foundation’s support to this program will provide intensive individualized training and instruction to enable students to develop the skills acquired in their primary education at Giant Steps and expand these skills in preparation for adult life. The program aims to have students participate to the best of their ability in a work place environment.

GROUP 8 EDUCATION | Building a Performance & Development Culture in Schools

The Caledonia Foundation’s support to Group 8 Education enabled a Teacher Performance Development System to be formulated using 10 pilot schools based in Victoria for the study.

THE HEARTWELL FITNESS SCHOLARSHIP PROGRAM

In 1997, Heartwell Fitness established The Heartwell Fitness Scholarship Program with its vision being to provide expert physical educational programs to non-compensable children with serious illnesses, injuries and disabilities. The Caledonia Foundation’s 2-year grant will assist with the rehabilitation of 2 physically impaired & disadvantaged children who otherwise would not have an opportunity to participate in this program

INSPIRE FOUNDATION | Sponsorship of 2 Beanbag Centres – Woden, ACT & Casuarina, NT

The Caledonia Foundation continued its support into 2005 with a further grant to each of these 2 Centres. The Inspire Foundation’s Beanbag Centres are one-stop shops providing educational, social and employment opportunities for young people through tailored computer training, internet access and content development.

LIFE FOR KIDS | Life for Kids Project.

Life for Kids program focuses and provides support to a group of approx 150 children, aged from 6 months to 17 years who are largely from the Waterloo/Redfern areas of Sydney; 70% have Aboriginal heritage. These children are vulnerable living on the margins of poverty and crisis in high rise housing commission units or shanty accommodation. LIFE’s focus is on creating a sense of trust, identity and belonging to the wider community for the children in ‘being there’ to listen and to share life experience. Provision of educational needs (shoes, books and uniforms) and school placements is also a major focus. The Caledonia Foundation supported this project in 2005.

MATILDA ROSE EARLY INTERVENTION CENTRE | Part-time Teachers Aid

The Caledonia Foundation continued its grant into 2005 which enabled The Matilda Rose Early Intervention Centre (MREIC) to employ a Teachers Aid to assist with the early education & development of hearing & physically impaired children who attend the Centre. The Centre was established in January 2001, to offer a program to meet the needs of profoundly deaf children, with additional disabilities. It caters for pre-school children, and also offers a transition program to the appropriate educational placement. MREIC is a joint venture between the Carnegie Foundation and the Sydney Cochlear Implant Centre (SCIC).

THE MIRABEL FOUNDATION | School's In

The Caledonia Foundation continued its support to Mirabel in 2005 which will assist disadvantaged children with extra school tuition. The children have been either orphaned or abandoned as a result of their parents’ substance abuse.

MISSION AUSTRALIA | Creative Youth Initiatives

Creative Youth Initiatives (CYI) provides “at risk” young people with creative opportunities, with the aim of building self esteem, improving communication skills and providing positive learning experiences and educational qualifications. The TAFE approved programs available to them through CYI are art, music or photography courses. The Caledonia Foundation supports the CYI initiative in 2005.

OASIS | Computer Technology Centre

The Caledonia Foundation continued its support in 2005 as part of a 3-year grant towards the development and training of disadvantaged young adolescents able to attend the OASIS' Youth Support Network Computer Technology Centre @ Surry Hills. The Centre focuses on training for video production & editing; repair, upgrading & recycling of computers; web site & database creation; input & management of SOS Salvo's on-line auction site.

OZHARVEST LIMITED | OzHarvest Food Rescue

OzHarvest is a newly formed organisation based in Alexandria. It distributes surplus prepared meals from restaurants and other commercial outlets to charitable organisations feeding the homeless and disadvantaged. The Caledonia Foundation’s grant to this project will indirectly assist the many young “at risk” adolescents and children who seek help through Sydney’s rescue centres.

SOCIAL VENTURES AUSTRALIA | SVA Boost! Fund

SOCIAL VENTURES AUSTRALIA | SVA Boost! Fund

The SVA Boost! Fund, through Social Ventures Australia, is Australia’s first venture philanthropy fund, which supports high impact social ventures that have clear, accountable and measurable strategies for social return. The Fund gives the added assurance that supported “investment” ventures receive more than just funding, they also receive management, strategic and operational advice to effectively realize social goals.

SOCIAL VENTURES AUSTRALIA | TradeStart

By supporting TradeStart, marginalized young people are able to participate in its training program 1 to 3 days per week for 2 to 3 months while still attending regular classes in school. The program encourages students to keep up with their school studies including maths and english classes. From the program they then move into an apprenticeship, a pre-apprenticeship course at TAFE or back to the mainstream education.

SOCIAL VENTURES AUSTRALIA | Beyond Empathy

Beyond Empathy’s (BE) focus is arts educational programs. It utilizes the arts, film, media, mentorship and partnerships to create sustainable pathways for young disadvantaged people throughout Australia. It aims to share understanding about people marginalized through poverty, homelessness, lack of education and employment opportunities, family and cultural isolation, violence and substance abuse through its arts projects. The Caledonia Foundation’s contribution will be directed to support arts educational programs in remote areas of The Northern Territory and regional NSW.

SOCIAL VENTURES AUSTRALIA | Hands on Learning

Hands on Learning supports an early intervention program facilitated by Frankston High School to meet the needs of highly disengaged students who are not performing in standard academically-based subjects and who are at threat of leaving school. Around 50 students spend one day a week working on projects around the school and local community.

SOCIAL VENTURES AUSTRALIA | Chutzpah Factory (Bendigo Mark II)

The Chutzpath Factory educational program aims to develop enterprise skills in young people who have been excluded from mainstream education systems as a result of family abuse, homelessness or juvenile criminal behaviours.

The Caledonia Foundation, through SVA Boost! Fund, agreed to support the 4 initiatives that follow.

STARLIGHT CHILDREN’S FOUNDATION | Starlight Fun Centres

The Starlight Fun Centre project is designed to deliver entertainment distraction to a child’s hospital bedside via e-inclusion and leading edge technology. Starlight’s goal is to provide one Starlight Fun Centre for every ten paediatric beds in Australia. Delivering this program to children in remote and regional hospitals is a priority. The Caledonia Foundation sponsored 6 Fun Centres which were installed at Gove, NT, Manning River Base Hospital, NSW, Condobolin Hospital, NSW, Echuca Regional Health Hospital, VIC, Western District Health Service, Hamilton VIC, South West Healthcare, Warnambool, VIC.

THE SMITH FAMILY | Learning for Life Program (Lithgow)

Learning for Life provides children and their families with access to personal and financial support through qualified staff and volunteer mentors and access to additional programs, advocacy, emotional guidance and referrals to specialist services The Caledonia Foundation’s support to this project will enable The Smith Family to employ an Education Support Worker in the Lithgow area, who will facilitate the implementation of The Smith Family’s Learning for Life program.

YOUTH OFF THE STREETS (YOTS) | YOTS Educational Programs - Airds Outreach Service

YOTS’ educational programs assist young people aged 13-18 yrs complete their education at YOTS specially created schools. These young people have either been affected by homelessness, physical and/or mental abuse/substance abuse. In 2005 The Caledonia Foundation’s support was directed to the Airds Outreach Program, which operates in an area with high levels of social disadvantage
